Southern Croatia - Dubrovnik

For the writer George Bernard Shaw, Dubrovnik was a “paradise on earth”. The southern Croatian city, which is surrounded on three sides by the sea on a rock, is actually considered one of the most beautiful cities in the Mediterranean. In addition to wonderful Mediterranean natural landscapes, beautiful offshore islands, Beaches and bays await visitors to one of the most charming old town complexes in Europe and a vibrant, cosmopolitan metropolis that is not only rich in culture.
The “Pearl of the Adriatic”, as the romantic city is also called, looks back on a long cultural and eventful past. Dubrovnik was once the Venetian trading port and for centuries it was an independent city republic that maintained trade relations with large parts of Southeast Europe and the Mediterranean. The mighty defenses that once protected the city still shape the cityscape today. The city walls of Dubrovnik are 1940 meters long, up to six meters wide and better preserved than anywhere else in Europe. They comprise a unique complex of different buildings from all periods of the city’s history, starting with its foundation in the seventh century. The main promenade (the “Stradun”), the Prince’s Palace, the Church of Saint Blaise, the cathedral, three large monasteries, the customs house and the town hall are just a few of the many sights. The entire car-free old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.
Dubrovnik is not only a cultural but also a tourist center. The city is increasingly becoming a meeting point for the international jet set and high society. Even Hollywood discovered the Adriatic pearl. The impressive city walls and fortifications of Dubrovnik serve as the location for the well-known TV series Game of Thrones.
